Q & A: Mitt Romney

J. Otto Tennant said...
May I ask your opinion about Mitt Romney?

(For what it is worth, I seriously doubt the competence in logic of anyone adhering to the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints.)

(And, for what it is worth, I am a Christian by the gift of grace and faith and, may I say it, logic.)

I would like to ask other questions, but I am an old man; maybe twenty years ago I would have had the guts to ask them.

I dislike Mitt Romney, not because he's a Mormon, but because I don't feel I can trust anything that comes out of his mouth. I don't personally believe in anything that is said at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, but I don't find it particularly harmful to anything, either, so... his being Mormon doesn't really concern me. His flip-flopping and pandering, however, does.

Cassy, I hope you will give Governor Romney another look. He is criticized as a flip flopper, but really his only change of position is on abortion. A major change, I'll grant you, but if one looks at all his other positions, they are remarkably stable. Once one stops dismissing him as a flip flopper, and looks at his reasons for this one change of position, he looks a lot better.

I find a lot of his positions are like mine-not black and white. For instance, regarding gay rights. He was a much stronger advocate of "gay rights" when it meant preventing discrimination in the workplace etc. When a small, albeit vocal minority, pushed for gay marriage, he was resistant to that.

I could go on and on, Mitt is NOT the lesser of all evils, he is a great choice but if one wants to consider the other options:
McCain: Immigration, McCain-Feingold, you've got to be joking. This guy was pushing HARD for legalizing all these illegals. "We can't deport all these people." Etc. Well, putting some penalties on business owners who employ them etc. is one way that we can decrease this scourge on society without deportation. McCain was wrong, again.

Thompson-No energy in this executive. Doesn't Mitt's organization and determination to win the nomination say a lot about how he would govern as President? By way of contrast, look at Thompson's lack of the effort in this regard. Not good. If you haven't thought enough about becoming president to get into the race in time to put together a solid effort, and put together a winning team, what does that tell you about his other work?

Guiliani-Rudy was great as Mayor. I lived in NYC during the transformation. I was in Times Square yesterday and it is an example of a legacy he can be proud of. You knew there was a but coming: He is a disaster from a personal point of view. He is pro-choice. The one time he was set to run against Hilary Clinton, he bailed out.

Huckabee-A one state wonder, if that. Where is Huckabee's organizational skill to tackle the whole country, not just Iowa? Sure he might do okay in Iowa, because all his eggs are in that basket. Who cares? In addition, we need somebody who is fiscally conservative and that doesn't seem to describe Huckabee.

I agree with Anonymous. I lean more and more towards Romney. He can manage and lead. I don't think he'll be soft on the borders either, like the current POTUS.

I think "flip-flopper" is a bit harsh too. Now, if he had said something in one statement like "I voted for it before I voted against it", then yes, Flip Flop. But having a change of heart and a real realization of what's right, well I hope we are all "guilty" of that. It's really the only way young skulls full of mush can change from liberals to conservatives!

Come on now -- I didn't say I wouldn't support him! ;) He just isn't my first choice. He's not my last, either.

And no, he isn't a flip-flopper of Kerry proportions, but I just don't get the sense that I can fully trust where he stands.

Either way, I won't vote for him in the primary. My vote will go to Duncan Hunter, unless he drops out, in which case it will go to Fred Thompson. However, should Mitt Romney get the nomination, I'll throw my full weight behind him -- that's a promise. :)

That's pretty much how I feel. Mitt is my guy, but Guiliani or any of the other's, except for R. Paul, would be miles ahead of Hilary, Obama or Edwards, and I will support them with enthusiasm.

I would have to say that even if Ron Paul (maybe because an asteroid hits earth and kills 90% of the sane Republicans) gets the nomination, I'd have to vote for him over B. Hussein Obama or Shrillary...or silky pony.
