Karl Roves resigns

Dems will be ecstatic:
Karl Rove, President Bush’s longtime political adviser, is resigning as White House deputy chief of staff effective Aug. 31, and returning to Texas, he said in an interview with Paul Gigot, editor of The Wall Street Journal’s editorial page.

Mr. Rove, who has held a senior post in the White House since President Bush took office in January 2001, told Mr. Gigot he first floated the idea of leaving a year ago. But he delayed his departure as, first, Democrats took Congress, and then as the White House tackled debates on immigration and Iraq, he said. He said he decided to leave after White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten told senior aides that if they stayed past Labor Day they would be obliged to remain through the end of the president’s term in January 2009.

“I just think it’s time,” Mr. Rove said in the interview. “There’s always something that can keep you here, and as much as I’d like to be here, I’ve got to do this for the sake of my family.” Mr. Rove and his wife have a home in Ingram, Texas, and a son who attends college in nearby San Antonio.

The legacy he leaves behind will not necessarily be the best one, but I also don't think he's quite as evil as Dems make him out to be. I'm curious which lefty blog will have the first hate-filled exultation.

Meanwhile, Michelle Malkin liveblogged President Bush's press conference.

Breaking News: Taliban releases two South Korean hostages

Breaking news:
Two women among the 23 South Koreans kidnapped by the Taliban in mid-July were freed Monday on a rural Afghan roadside and then driven to a U.S. base, the first significant breakthrough in a hostage drama now more than three weeks old.

The two women, who broke into tears after seeing the international Red Cross officials there to take custody of them, got out of a dark gray Toyota Corolla driven by an Afghan elder and into one of two waiting Red Cross SUVs. The women said nothing to reporters alerted to the handoff location five miles southeast of Ghazni city by a Taliban spokesman.

The Taliban decided to release these two "for the sake of good relations between the Korean people and the Taliban," said Qari Yousef Ahmadi, who claims to speak for the insurgent group.

"We are expecting the Korean people and government to force the Kabul administration and the U.S. to take a step toward releasing Taliban prisoners," Ahmadi said by telephone from an undisclosed location.

The South Korean Foreign Ministry identified the freed hostages as Kim Kyung-ja and Kim Ji-na. Previous media reports said they were 37 and 32 years old, respectively.

Two male captives were executed by gunfire in late July. Fourteen women and five men are still being held.

We can't celebrate too much -- there are still nineteen innocent people being held in God knows what kind of conditions, with two innocent men killed.

And the Taliban calls this a "gesture of good will", undoubtedly pleased with themselves for their ability to be what they consider merciful.

It's not over yet though, and with any luck the rest of these hostages will be released as well. However, knowing the monsters that they're up against, it's impossible to tell what will happen.

Make sure to keep them in your prayers.

Roseanne keeps going

This woman just don't shut up!!

Jeez... one of her handlers needs to keep her away from the keyboard. Her first series of new posts on her official MySpace page are mildly disturbing -- she actually calls herself cute, for one, and apparently, the whole intern thing was one, big joke:
Date: Aug 9, 2007 5:35 PM
Subject: i wish that perez h.
Body: would sneak onto my land here, and then i could legally shoot him. I think i could lure him with promises of free lard cookies and chubby chasing gays who would actually want to let him gag on their knobs. He didnt get that my blogs were a joke, and then he didnt get that my intern thing was a joke either. How can you be gay and that dense? He may as well be an ignorant fat hillbilly…he has all the astute appreciation of irony and humor that they do. Gay guys should turn straight out of shame that he is one of their kind.

Date: Aug 9, 2007 5:48 PM
Subject: i am not rosie odonnell
Body: and tired of people thinking i am. One, I am cute, two, i like guns and I am crazy not depressed. I am glad that whoopi got the job on the view and not me after all. She is perfect for that show… and like rosie she will talk about things that have nothing to do with working people, public schools, or unions, or how both parties are irrelevant to this country’s constitution. Plus, I would not be able to stop staring at Barbara Walters’ head the whole time. It is huge. she looks like mr. burns.

Date: Aug 9, 2007 5:58 PM
Subject: posh spice looks
Body: like a ghoul dressed up like a drag queen.

From Perez Hilton, she still just keeps on going:
Date: Aug 10, 2007 2:14 AM
Subject: a couple of people
Body: here on myspace mistakenly thought I was threatening to shoot a little known misogynist gossip monger who named himself after a talentless drunk driver. What I actually said was that if he were to TRESPASS on my land, I would thankfully have the right as an american citizen, under the great constitution of this country, to protect myself, and to use deadly force in that pursuit.
I guess the four of you think it is ok for trespassers and other criminals not to be punished for breaking the law. To me, that means that you really do not support our troops, who are fighting in Iraq to uphold the freedoms
that we hold dear. Shame on you. You would defend a trespassing predator while hardworking citizens are not safe in their homes. What a disgrace, indeed!
Remember a smile is the quickest way to improve your appearance!

Date: Aug 10, 2007 2:32 AM
Subject: its all in fun folks!
Body: just trying to get a laugh.. i think p hilton is funny too..
I love rosie o donnell too! she has balls of brass and did a great thing on the view. she could have sat back with all her money and kept her mouth shut and said nothing, like most stars, but she put her ass on the line and i
have so much respect for her and for Joy behar, and even elizabeth, who I do not agree with, but puts herself out there. I love whoopi too, and I know she has lots to say and lots to add to that show, and I am happy for her.
Barbara Walters is a broadcasting genious and knows how to stay in the spotlight because of that fact. I love Oprah too, even though I make fun of her as well.
I am glad that pearl jam is talking about net neutrality too, and I hope myspace doesn’t start getting censored anytime soon. these are scarey times, and a laugh is good! I have twelve thousand friends here now, and cannot
keep up with this place. I blog at my own website, roseanneworld.com, and have for ten years now. Visit me there daily. I will drop in here now and then!

Isn't she just special??

1998 is NOT the warmest year on record

NASA has rather quietly fixed the numbers behind a "ground-breaking" discovery: a chart that showed that 1998 was the warmest year in American history. Get that? Warmest. year. ever.

But now, we're finding out that those numbers were wrong, something GISS head and enviromoonbat extraordinaire James Hansen, who created the graphs along with NASA’s Reto Ruedy, had no official announcement or comment to make on.

It wasn't until Steve McKintyre, who operates the blog Climate Audit asked to see the algorythms Hansen used to generate the data, which was refused to him. So McKyntire reverse-engineered the numbers and found a Y2K bug. He notified Hansen and Ruedy of the problem, who said they would fix it.

NASA released the corrected figures, and boy, are they sure different:
NASA has now silently released corrected figures, and the changes are truly astounding. The warmest year on record is now 1934. 1998 (long trumpeted by the media as record-breaking) moves to second place. 1921 takes third. In fact, 5 of the 10 warmest years on record now all occur before World War II. Anthony Watts has put the new data in chart form, along with a more detailed summary of the events.

The really fun part is that NASA and GISS didn't report this.

You would think that they would, considering the current global warming "debate". But because according to the Goracle, Hansen, and other enviromoonbats like them there is a "consensus", there's no need to. Throw any scientific data at them you'd like to, and it won't matter, because according to these guys, the debate is over anyways.

Agree with the Goracle and you'll get more money.

Another interesting thought -- how accurate could temperature data be in the 19th century? The 18th? The 17th? I mean, we can't go back in time and test data from 1781 or something using the superior technology we have today to find out what temperatures were like then. So when it comes down to it, how do we really, truly know what the warmest years are? I'm no science whiz, so if there is some way to accurately find out temperatures from like, 1824 then by all means, let me know. I just find it hard to believe that, even with the corrected data, we can be certain that these years are the warmest years ever in American history.

Oh well.

Somehow, I don't see this going onto the cover of Newsweek.

Would you rather name your kid Superman or 4Real?

Honestly, I think this may be the dumbest court battle ever.

A New Zealand couple had a baby. They wanted to name him 4Real, but the New Zealand Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages rejected the name, saying that numerals are not allowed in names. Now, Pat and Sheena Wheaton are officially naming him Superman, but will refer to him as 4Real:
A New Zealand couple is looking to call their newborn son Superman -- but only because their chosen name of 4Real has been rejected by the government registry.

Pat and Sheena Wheaton say they will get around the decision by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages by officially naming their son Superman but referring to him as 4Real, the New Zealand Herald newspaper has reported.

The Wheatons decided on the name after seeing the baby for the first time in an ultrasound scan and realizing their baby was "for real."

They decided 4Real was the best way to write it, but the name was rejected because the registrar said a name had to be a sequence of characters.

Pat Wheaton said he was considering appealing the decision through the courts, but whatever happens he won't be budged on his choice.

"No matter what, it's going to stay 4Real," Wheaton told the Herald, "I'm certainly not a quitter."

A spokesman for the Department of Internal Affairs, which operates the registry, told the Herald discussions with the Wheatons about their son's name were continuing.

The baby is now 2 months old. The Wheatons first applied to register his name in June.

Let's say the Wheatons decided to fight for the name. Regardless of the outcome of the case, the poor kid loses! He'll be mocked for life -- whichever of the two names they give him! I mean, my God -- Superman?! 4Real?!

Parents who do this to their children, I'm curious: do you consider the effect your ridiculous names will have on your child? I mean, did the Wheatons ever stop and think about how their son will feel at 5, 10, 15 about being called 4Real? Or even worse, having to introduce himself as Superman?!

I mean, either way, this kid's gonna lose.

Don't get me wrong -- I don't think the government should tell people what they can and can't name their children, barring profanity. However, I do think parents should exercize some common sense, and think of their damn child before they name the poor kid some crackpot name like 4Real!

4Real. I can imagine a whole running joke very similar to the whole "Who's On First" bit coming from that name.

For the ladies

I've posted lots of pictures of female celebrities, but rarely do I post anything from the male hotties. While I do think John Mayer should stick to singing and keep his mouth shut about world affairs, that doesn't change the fact that day-um, he looked HOT at a concert in West Palm Beach!

So, for the ladies -- enjoy this picture from PerezHilton.com. WOW.

Mother of the Year Award

I think Britney Spears may have just lost the Mother of the Year Award. No, I'm thinking it should now go to a feminist blogger, Biting Beaver, whose blog you can read by invitiation only. She's the one who enjoyed support from Majikthise, Feministing, and everyone's favorite feminist, Amanda Marcotte.

This wonderful mother apparently hates her son. By her logic, he hates women because he is a teenage boy who looks at porn (I thought just about every teenage boy looks at porn all the time, and even past the teenage years -- I'd be more worried if he didn't look at porn, personally). He also is destined to rape, abuse, hate, and subjugate women in any way possible because -- drumroll, please -- he has a penis!!

Don't believe me? Read it for yourself -- she mentions it in blog posts here and here (emphasis mine -- and there is some swearing):
I've had him read Dworkin, my site, and other places (namely OAG's site) and I still can't unseat this problem. He can recite feminist literature all day long, he can understand the tenets, the ideas behind it, how it links together but he will not allow this knowledge to stand in the way of his porn use.

I know, that as soon as my child leaves my home and moves into his own place that he will be looking at porn immediately. I know that I am raising a problem for women. I know that this child will one day grow and will fully absorb the messages that porn sends to men. I know that my child masturbates to degradation of my people (when I use that phrase I mean womyn) and that with every orgasm he will further solidify his own hatred of and superiority over, women.

I know that there will likely come a day where my son coerces a young woman into sex (rape) and there isn't a damned thing I can do about it. I look into the eyes of my son and they still sparkle like they did when he was a baby, but he's not a baby anymore, he's growing into a man and that man will have trained himself to degrade women before he leaves my home.

But he is not and the way he treats his girlfriend, his sister, his grandmother, and myself make me hate myself for not pouring him down the sink at Planned Parenthood or grabbing a rusty coathanger and doing the job myself even if it killed me.

My boys are good boys, they're smart boys, but they are boys and as such, the Patriarchy want them. The Patriarchy is doing it's level-best to assimilate my boys and bring them into the folds of Male Power and Privilege and it's my job to put the spark of empathy, the fire of self-determination and respect into their young minds to make women safer. To make their wives and girlfriends and fuck buddies safe from them, because left unchecked they could rape, they already have the equipment.

Now, if only I can figure out what to say *sigh*

Isn't that just lovely?

And of course, to new wave feminists, this is not only accepted and seen as normal, but any argument to the contrary is a sign of sexism and hatred of women.

But the best thing about Biting Beaver is that she forces her son to read her site, so he'll be wonderfully aware of how she wishes she aborted him.

"Performance enhanced" Barry Bonds breaks home run record

Wow. This is so exciting.

(Yawn.)

Everyone is just SO excited about how Barry Bonds broke the all-time home run record last night with his 756th home run.

Because, you know, it's SUCH an accomplishment to break the all-time home run record, once held and achieved based on pure talent by Hank Aaron, by using steroids "performance enhancers" until his biceps were so huge that redwood tree trunks were jealous of their size. He claims he never used steroids ("performance enhancers", people, come on!), but his trainer was indicted and charged by a federal grand jury of supplying his players with anabolic steroids, and escaped prosecution by striking a plea bargain which shockingly allowed him to not name the players under the influence of the steroids. He's currently in the middle of an investigation for perjury after he testified that his trainer gave him a balm and a clear substance that he claimed was flaxseed oil and arthritis balm. Prosecutors, however, maintain that this was actually "the cream" and "the clear", both forms of the popular steroid THG.

Hank Aaron got that record based on pure talent. Barry Bonds, in my opinion, didn't. The baseball greats of today are not the same as the true baseball greats of yesterday. There's a vast difference between the two, and to me, all Barry Bonds did was taint the all-time home run record. It isn't baseball glory to hit home run after home run because you are all pumped up on steroids "performance enhancers", when baseball greats of the past like Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth did it on talent alone. Barry Bonds doesn't compare to those men.

Hank Aaron, by the way, did not attend the game where Bonds broke his record.

So, cheer away because a performance enhanced egomaniac created a new record. Maybe one day, a new Hank Aaron will come along, and blow Bonds' record away based on talent alone. We all know it's possible. When that happens, that person will know they won that record with some legitimacy.
